Frequently Asked Questions About Hiring Our Workers

Employment Program

Do I pay the worker directly or does the Millionair Club Charity pay them?
After a job is complete, the MCC pays the worker directly and mails the employer an invoice.  The MCC covers L&I, Social Security and unemployment insurance for workers. The workers receive a starting wage of $13 per hour.

Why did you stop allowing employers to pay workers directly?
For over 90 years the MCC's workers could negotiate their own hourly wage with employers and be paid cash at the end of the day.  There were many drawbacks to this model.  So, starting September 1, 2014, the MCC changed its system so that all workers in its program are employees of the MCC. To hire our workers, employers must sign a contract.  The workers are guaranteed their hourly wage, and a pay check once a week.  The employer is mailed an invoice upon completion of the job.  The MCC takes care of payroll, employment taxes, Social Security and L&I insurance costs. For this convenience, employers pay $18.75 to $24.95 per hour, depending on the task and whether they are a business, non-profit, or residential customer.  This new structure provides greater protection for our employers, our workers and us as a nonprofit organization.  In addition, the MCC has established a partnership with a local bank for the worker to cash their check and start a checking account.  In this way, the worker is establishing verifiable income and a credit history that enables them to apply successfully for housing and personal loans.

How do I know workers are trustworthy?
All of our workers go through an application process that includes a personal interview, a local and national criminal background check, and proving they have legal permission to work in the United States.

Do I have to provide lunch?
No, the Millionair Club Charity offers a sack lunch to every worker before they leave for a job.

How many hours of work am I required to provide?
We require a four-hour minimum.

How will the worker get to my home or business?
Workers take public transportation, so you do not need to pick up your worker at the Millionair Club Charity.

What if I live far from a bus stop?
Our workers travel all over King County. If your worksite is in or near Seattle, close to a bus line, workers may be able to travel directly to your worksite. If not, they can take public transit and meet you at a Park and Ride near your worksite.

Am I liable if a worker gets hurt on my property?
With our invoice payment system, the Millionair Club Charity provides insurance through the Department of Labor and Industries on your behalf.

Do I have to provide tools and materials?
Yes — you provide all tools and supplies. We also encourage you to provide work gloves. Workers also must have access to a bathroom and drinking water.

What kind of jobs are MCC workers able to do to help my business?
Our workers can do a wide variety of jobs for your business or home including, but not limited to: moving assistance, warehouse work, interior and exterior painting, assembly line work, landscaping, raking leaves, pruning trees and shrubs, building fences, washing windows, fertilizing or laying sod for your lawn, laying gravel, moving dirt or bark, trenching, cleaning decks or siding, doing home repairs, conducting maintenance at businesses, installing drywall and other construction-related tasks, demolition, hauling debris, restaurant/catering work, event staffing, dishwashing, residential, office and property cleaning, and much more.  If the task you are looking for help with is not listed here, please call and ask us if we have a worker who can help you.

How long will it take to get a response after I call in a work order?
The MCC's employment program office is open Monday through Friday, 6 AM to 2 PM, and on Saturday from 6 AM to 10 AM.  If you call outside of those office hours, you can leave a message, and an employment specialist will get back to you within 48 hours.
